Zhang Wei
Zhang Wei, a professor and doctoral supervisor in the Piano Department of the China Conservatory of Music, has served as the department head. He is a member of the Chinese Musicians' Association and a Council Member of the China Piano Society.
His performance activities span both domestic and international stages. He has given concerts in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenyang, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Macau, Singapore, Seoul (South Korea), Vietnam, Australia, Italy, and Moscow, receiving favorable acclaim. He has also recorded piano works from different periods and styles (CDs, DVDs) and has published articles in journals such as People's Music, Art Review, Piano Artistry, and Music and Performance.
Professor Zhang Wei studied in the Piano Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and later pursued further studies in Moscow, Russia, under a Chinese government scholarship. He has studied under professors including Zhang Mei, Chen Langjiang, Lin Zhengang, Chao Zhijue, Elena Krasovskaya, and Naum Shtarkman, among others.
He began teaching at the China Conservatory of Music in 1994 and participated in the establishment of its Piano Department in 2001. As an educator, he has nurtured a large number of piano talents. His students have participated in major domestic and international piano competitions and achieved outstanding results. He has been honored by the Conservatory with titles such as "Outstanding Teacher in Three Aspects of Education" and "The Most Outstanding Professional Course Teacher in My Mind." He has also delivered teaching lectures and masterclasses in numerous cities across China. The National Centre for the Performing Arts has invited him twice to give special lectures and performances for its "Classic Art Lectures" series. He has also been invited as a guest professor to teach masterclasses and individual piano lessons at the Korean Yeoncheon DMZ International Music Festival, the German Wassenberg Piano Summer Camp, the Colorado Piano Masterclasses in the USA, the Sicily International Piano Festival in Italy, and the Beijing International Music Festival and Academy.
He also serves as a judge for numerous domestic and international piano competitions, including: judge for the 2nd and 3rd National CCTV Piano and Violin Competitions; judge for the 5th National Youth Piano Competition; judge for the 1st National Piano Competition for Music Conservatories; judge for the Yamaha Cup "Academy Award" of the Nine Major Chinese Music Conservatories; judge for the finals of the China Steinway Competition; guest judge for the Asia Piano Open Competition; judge for the Pearl River·Kayserburg International Youth Piano Competition; Chairman of the Jury for the National Youth Piano Competition of the "Huanglong Music Season"; Chairman of the Jury for the Piano Competition of the Hummingbird International Music Festival at the Eastman School of Music, USA; China Region Chairman for the Pittsburgh International Youth Arts Festival, USA; judge for the 11th China Music Golden Bell Award Piano Competition; judge for the 15th Khachaturian International Piano Competition; and judge for the 30th International Brahms Piano Competition, among others.
